Finnish design company Artek is keeping alive the designs of visionary behind its foundation in 1935. Alvar Aalto and three fellow Finns had started this firm ‘to trade in furniture and to promote modern culture of habitation by exhibitions and other means.’ The design company has produced works of several designers since then but its claim to fame is still the very modern furniture designs of Aalto. The furniture, lamps and textiles designed by the renowned architect are still as bit contemporary as they are classic in their approach. The materials might have changed since then – the company is making designs in Bamboo instead of pure wood that they were envisioned in – but they are still as bit elegant.
Amongst the latest designs the Artek White and Artek Glossy Black collections are just amazing. The monochromatic creations are retaining their elegance and yet are serving up on the functionality too. And as far as the company is concerned, despite being backed up by Swedish financiers Proventus AB now, it continues to be housed in Finland and works in close unison with Alvar Aalto Foundation to promote architecture and design.
