Winner of the competition to design a pavilion for Shanghai Expo 2010, the Belgian Pavilion by Conix Architects and JV Realys resembling the brain cell image seems to take you straight into the human brain. Boasting the artistic and scientific richness of the nation, the Belgian Pavilion also depicts the nation’s central position in Europe, a cross-point of the Latin, the Germanic and the Anglo-Saxon cultural traditions. Featuring a big roof structure, a symbol of communal shelter fully open to the outside world, the structure of the pavilion is made of three closed facades, composed of stretched metal plates, to adapt to Shanghai’s warm and moist climate. Slated to open in May 2010, the Belgian pavilion will accommodate the exposition halls of Europe and Belgium, a restaurant, a bar and a VIP center.
