Boxel campus pavilion made from recycled beer boxes

Recycling abandoned beer boxes, students at the University of Applied Sciences in Detmold, Germany, have come up with an innovative pavilion called the “Boxel” that will provide a scenic background for different events, such as presentations, concerts, events and gatherings in the campus. Comprising over 2,000 beer boxes, organized along free geometry, the pavilion instead of stacking the empty beer boxes one upon another organizes them with a simple system of slats and screws next to each other. Featuring concrete-lined boxes at the three base points to work as foundation, the pavilion includes extra bracings in the upper part of the boxes, which give stiffness of the modules and help the structure maintain its shape.
