Fungus Chairs: Functional art at its best!

mad fungus chairs

Green painted benches dotting the parks or sideways are the first thing that pop in one’s mind when one thinks of public seating. Well, things seemed to have moved far ahead of boring benches as creative designers come up with seating designs that can be easily taken as brilliant pieces of art. MAD, a Chinese architecture design office came up with a brilliant public seating design in Living Zhangjiang 2007, a public art project organized by Zhangjiang Hi-tech Park and the local government of Pudong District, China. The seating takes inspiration from the ecosystem and takes the shape of fungus. While the fungus chairs grow to seat any number of people as more number of chairs get interlocked or scattered around to make the seating more private, the infinite combinations ensures that no two seating are similar. It’s a designers world and no one seems to be complaining!
