Jean-Marie Tjibaou Cultural Center designed by Renzo Piano is an interesting architectural manifestation of both traditional and modern building techniques. Built in veneration to Kanak leader Jean-Marie Tjibaou the cultural center’s design is a dedication to Kanak people’s rich cultural heritage. Located near the capital city of New Caledonia, Noumé aalong a narrow strip of land, teh center is surrounded by ocean and lush greenery.
The green building design of the center is largely a modern version of traditional architecture. The pavilions have been made using iroko wood along with glass, steel, and bamboo. Operable roof skylights and use of laminated bamboo wood allows penetration of abundant natural sunlight. Bamboo also helps in ventilating the pavilion by pushing hot air up to the top.
The center has asymmetrically placed 10 pavilion centers of varying sizes heights between 9 and 24 meters. Each of the pavilions has been dedicated to a specific function such as music, dance, painting and sculpture etc.
