Table lovers have I got a treat for you or what! Nathan Hunter is a great designer. In his studio he churns out the most pleasing of furniture pieces. A student of sculpture, music, painting and photography, his designs exude the aesthetics of various art forms. Hunter desires practical utility combined with aesthetic desirability in all his creations and what follows are some of the most exquisite tables that he has created.

Trapezoid Coffee Table

This coffee table is all about counterpoints and is a refreshing take on the Noguchi’s classic. The table is hand-carved in maple and the curly parts interlock wonderfully well. The geometric 0.5” thick glass top is in contradiction to the organic maple curves. Dimensions of the Trapezoid Coffee table are: 46w x 30d x 16h inches. It is available in a variety of woods and costs $3,250. Pictured top.

Parabola Hall Table

Again a table with glass top, this one incorporates steel parabolas as matter of visual interest. Carved and veneered panels intersect the steel parabolas to set up the Parabola Hall Table. Dimensions are: 60w x 15d x 35h inches, and this one’s available in curly maple, quilted maple and pommele aspele. Priced at $4,200.

Pi Hall Table

Mathematical figure of Pi is inspiration behind this creation and the figure is captured subtly but beautifully. Bold colors and synchronous lines arrest individual’s attention and a closer look reveals that in the structure are molded first eight numbers of Pi (3.141615…). The stainless steel sphere depicts infinite series of digits while the vertical and horizontal wooden blocks depict the very strict order of the mathematical figure. Stainless steel, wenge and makore veneer all combine to give the Pi Hall Table an appealing figure. Dimensions are: 60w x 15d x 35h inches.

Pas de Deux Side Table

Contrast is emphasized in this design with a great thought put into the form and shape of wooden panels and steel rods. Veneered panels bend away from each other even as they intersect stainless steel rods. The panels are pommele sapele wood and the bars are steel and bronze. Once again the Pas de Deux Side Table is topped off by a 0.5” thick glass top. Dimensions are: 20w x 20d x 22h inches, and the table also comes in curly maple, quilted maple or wenge. Costs $1,400 for wenge and $1,250 for other makes.

Variation 1 Side Table

The make of this side table is as interesting as the name is. Simplicity and yet originality are hallmarks of Variation 1 Side Table. A single curved and veneered panel stands and balances adroitly on a curved aluminum rod to create a cantilevered table. The 0.5” thick glass top is similarly balanced on another aluminum rod. Dimensions are: 20w x 20d x 22h inches, and the Variation 1 Side Table is priced at $1,650. It is available in wenge, curly maple, quilted maple and pommele sapele.

Each one of these tables is a wonderful creation, each exploring interaction between contrasting shapes and/or materials. Arresting and appealing, Nathan Hunter’s creations will be a great addition to the inventory of any living-room.
