The Battle of Trafalgar’s nostalgia relived in a game of chess

The stage is set for yet another “Battle of Trafalgar,” but the battlefield has changed from Cape Trafalgar (on the Spanish coast) to London. Reinterpreting the Battle of Trafalgar, Spanish designer Jaime Hayón backed by Arts Council England and the Spanish Institute for Foreign Trade has come up with huge chess set design for the Trafalgar Square, London. Scheduled to be launched as part of London Design Festival, running 19–27 September, the gigantic chessboard called “The Battle of Trafalgar” features thirty-two ceramic chess pieces, each up to 2m tall. Placed in the middle of Trafalgar Square, the interactive installation will invite the visitors to take part in large-scale chess battles as a design reinterpretation of the Battle of Trafalgar.
