Solar Planter waters plants with air moisture

We have abundant natural resources around us, and it’s just a matter of using our wits to make the most out of the vast storehouse for the betterment of life on the earth. Taking advantage of the natural environment, designer Kevin Cheng has come up with an innovative window box called the “Solar Planter” that as its name indicates makes use of solar energy and artificial lighting to run a condensation system, which gathers moisture from ambient air. While a running fan located in the exit vent creates suction within the planter that draws air to gather moisture for plants.

Integrating a device to record light and water input to optimize maximize plant growth, the solar-powered planter connects to a Peltier module, which becomes a thermoelectric heat pump. The planter features two sinks, cold and hot; the former soaks up the surrounding heat and transfers it to the latter for radiation, where it cools after condensation and discharged in the room. Moreover, users can customize the base of the planter, containing solar cells, in different colors, styles and patterns according to individual preferences as well as home decor.
