Steampunk mechanical rotary smartphone resembles an artwork

Rotary Mechanical Smartphone

When every phone maker around the world comes in with a new design, bringing in new features, shapes and colors, Richard Clarkson has created a concept phone with rotary mechanical design. Due to its special contrasting appearance and functioning style, it proves to be more of an art piece than a mobile device meant for regular use.

Built as a concept of Rotary Mechanical, this mobile device lets the user feel the intricacies of modern and traditional design by the dual-operating methods of the device, mechanical as well as electronic. The dial of the phone is in the form of a rotary mechanical dial placed at the back, and the front portion features the screen. Also a traditional numeric keypad exists on the phone, integrated to function along with the other features like the touchscreen.

Unlike a preceding design by Amid Moranganjeh, this design has more details and physical form, which would add to the user experience. The brass dial, for instance, is interchangeable and can be replaced, which takes us to situation similar to changing camera lenses; giving physical tangibility to a phone which is otherwise gifted with other modern features that have totally different method of operating. Some might even define it as adding life to digital objects, something which designer Richard Clarkson feels has become the trend. He comments by saying,

The rotary mechanical smart phone is based on the idea of incorporating more feeling and life into our everyday digital objects. In modern times these objects have come to define us, but who and what defines these objects? Are we happy with generic rectangles of a touchscreen or do we want something with more tangibility, something with more life, something with more aura?

On the first look, it does resemble an art piece and a journey back in time, if you compare it to the modern mobile devices. Though it may appear creative, but for sure is gonna be limited to a concept than a physical product. Unfortunately, the world today is moving toward touch and gesture technology, whereas this phone seems to be other way around.
