Striking extension of National Library of Austria

Beijing based architect Prechtek’s design has incorporated a lot of cultural facilities to the National Library of Austria as part of the extension project. The design is more of an extension of the park that is bordering it. The new seamless structure houses different facilities like 1200 sqm underground exhibition hall, creative studios, smaller multifunctional hall, shops and restaurants. The library, located at Hofburg in Vienna, provides a spatial experience to the visitors. The extension project seems to be pulled out of an urban landscape. It is in a flawless spiral form featuring a mosaic of different crystal like excisions around its body.

The extension doesn’t interfere with the public circulation on the street. It arches off the ground to create a curvilinear garden on its roof. The fire and drop off emergency line placed under the arch allows the cars to drive under the structure for accessing the main entrance. Filtering the natural light through to the interior, the extension creates beautiful view patterns within. The ambiance itself forces the visitors to intuitively move to the foyer and enjoy different programs.
